Some recent photos

So as you can see from the comparison, Gray is much bigger than Caroline. And according to the last weight check, a whopping 5 lbs bigger!

Caroline also loved her new bike helmet, as you can see. Is it not obvious that daddy is excited to take them on the bike?!?! But she's been busy driving her new car! She feels so independent! And check out the gnome look she's got going on. :)

And yes, we're eating solids these days. From Gray's face, it would appear he did not like what he was eating, but that's his normal MO with the initial bite. He came to love and want more avocado!

1st Football Game

Beau and I took Gray and Caroline to their first football game: USC vs. The Citadel. Now, The Citadel did beat us, which was a huge surprise and disappointment, but we still had a great time! Beau and Gray dressed to support the Gamecocks, while Caroline and I dressed to support The Citadel. The kids did great at the tailgate and watching the game. Gimi joined us as well, which definitely helped make the day easier and fun. It was a long day come bed time, but well worth it. Here's to many more!

Indian on a Monday

Oh yeah! Made Indian food on a Monday! And it was delicious! Fried fish in Indian spices with quick-pickled onions, yogurt and cilantro in naan. And on the side: Garam Masala stir-fried bindi (okra). Yummo!

Mr. Gray

My “Mr. Squishy”, “Mr. Snuggles”, “Big Fella”. He’s snuggly and smiley. Very infrequently is he just “chill”. Gray is either on a real high or he’s on a real low. He’s emotional and feels deeply. He’s crawling all over the place and likes to try and pull himself up on things. It’s common to think he’s sitting still and hear a big thud realizing he’s just fallen over onto the hardwood floors. But he’s learned that it’s no big deal. He picks himself up and tries again. He’s already started the big older brother gig with taking Caroline’s toys and taunting her with them all the while, watching and laughing as she starts crying. In the morning we can walk into the nursery to find sitting up gripping the bars of the crib just smiling at and talking to us, waiting for one of us to get him out of there! He’s the big eater out of the two (that’s not obvious) that just continues to seem to want more and more. His hair is growing in fast, making him look like a chia pet. He loves to be tickled on his tummy with daddy’s beard. And he loves the outdoors, the sunlight and the cool breeze. And he will chew on anything within arm reach!

Sweet Caroline

My sweet little Caroline. She is the stoic one of the two. Her two little bottom teeth were coming in at the same time and there was minimal fussing and no drooling. Her smile has only gotten bigger as she’s gotten older. I wish I had a video of her laughing, as it sounds more like a panting. She’s crawling and pushing herself up. When she gets sleepy she rubs her ear and will simply lay her head down wherever she is just to get some shut eye! She’s talking and learning that voice of hers. And she’ll eat anything I give her! Her newest eat was avocado. The initial “yuck” face quickly passed as she realized it was something she enjoyed. As you can see in the picture, her little soft drum is a favorite as she buries her face in it each time it lights up and plays music. She and her daddy love to fly around the house with the Star Wars theme song in the background. And she has become the snuggler with all things soft – the girl loves a “lovie”. Lastly, Sweet Caroline is becoming her song, with big smiles emerging during “so good, so good, so good”.

7 Months

Can't believe we're on the other half of approaching one year! Gray is crawling and Caroline is scooting around. Both are sitting up really well! Both are getting into solids. Gray has two teeth and Caroline is about to have two break through. Their both full of smiles and laughter and are so much fun to be around! They're beginning to notice each other more and find one another so funny. Many times we look at them laughing and giggling together. I've also found that no matter what direction I lay them in their cribs they turn themselves so that they face each other. They're so much fun!

Not sleepy

As you can see, Gray has learned to sit up and therefore isn't too interested in naps any longer. But I love walking into their room in the morning to find their little turtleheads pop up to greet me!

Yuko and Matt in town from Japan

Yuko and Matt stopped by Tuesday to meet the kiddos. I have been friends with Matt since middle school and each time we get together it is like we haven't missed a beat. We headed out to The Granary for dinner and it was great food with even better conversation. There was talk of visiting to hike Mt. Fuji or even for the Tokyo Olympics in a few year. I hope we can make that happen.

Just the start of it

Mornings like this make waiting for fall completely worth it! A walk in the park with coffee in hand and my favorite people. Nothin' better.

Bottles

This is what a typical day looks like in the Evans household after a day of used bottles. This is an almost daily occurrence. 😎

Homemade Madness

For all of you out there who said we wouldn't/couldn't do it with a baby, much less two...bam!!! We made homemade bread and homemade pasta last night for dinner. And with that pasta we made delicious Linguine and Clams ( the best one we've done yet)!

Although it's true that we have frozen pizza or BLTs for dinner during the work week...we love cooking it up big on the weekends. Since we're not going out as much as we once were were bringing those meals in.

Eulogizing Argos

I picked up Argos in Ocala Florida. I had been with Pfizer for a little over a year I think and I decided I was ready for a dog. Florence was so exciting (ha) and I had plenty of time on my hands. So I did all the research and decided on a breeder. Argos’ original name was “Chance.” This was short for Fat Chance because he was the runt of the litter. Martin gets credit for Argos because he reminded me of reading the Odyssey in Mrs. Boleman’s class in high school. Argos was the dog bred by Odysseus before he went to fight the Trojan War. His loyalty is legendary since he waited 10 years on the dock for his master to return. I can’t remember what I paid but I left Ocala with a little cardboard box in the passenger seat with my new best friend in it. I made him a promise that we would have a great life together. This is my attempt to capture some of the memories from that life together.

One of my favorite memories is traveling out to Utah to head down the Green River. Arg rode in the minivan and couldn’t wait to get out. Once we were there I think he had the time of his life. We had two canoes and he would get anxious if we separated too much. His barking would only stop if we stayed close together. He also didn’t want to miss anything and I have a video of him sleeping while sitting up. We would stop along the way and throw the ball on a sand bar until it was time to get moving again. It was a great trip.

While I was working in Florence, Mom convinced me to use the money from the sale of my Tacoma to buy a sailboat. Argos was happiest there. Every weekend we would head down to Charleston and live on the boat. He slept across from me in the salon and I even got him to climb the stairs out a few times. When we were underway he would head up to the bow to bar at the waves as they broke. He hated splashing water.

Kathryn brought up that she will miss his face in the window beside the door. Argamemnon (he had so many names I am surprised he answered to anything) would wait for us to come home and you could be sure his silhouette would be there waiting. He would also make the best clicking noise as he walked on the hardwood floor. Late at night, he would slowly click from our bedroom to the back door when he would burst through the dog door to try and surprise a deer. I will miss that sound. I also loved the sighs he would let out when he laid down. We would say he was “bore”-gos.

After we had the kids the “A man” would ride with me to drop them off at daycare. He loved to be in the car and I would come back out and see him sitting the passenger seat waiting for me. He spent so much time driving back and forth from Florence I think the car was his second home in his mind. One night as we rode through Flo-town, Phil Collins’ “In the air tonight” came on the radio and the street lamps danced in the windows in such a way that it felt like we were Crocket and Tubbs from Miami Vice.

I am on a plane coming back from two weeks in California. One week was for work and the other was a chance to heal. Kathryn came out for the weekend and we rode up the coast and then Morgan came out and we hiked Half Dome in Yosemite and then the Narrows in Zion. I am sure I could come up with more stories but I am teary on the plane already. Below is what I wrote for the Mount Pleasant magazine. I don’t know if it will be published but I can’t conclude it better than this.

Argos has been my best friend for almost a third of my life. During that time we have had some amazing adventures and he has made me a better person. We have canoed down the Green River in Utah for 80+ miles and backpacked in the southeast for many more. He has been in the shotgun seat for more than 10,000 miles as i commuted back and forth to Florence while I worked there. On the weekends we lived on a sailboat and he learned how to jump in the forward hatch and climb up the stairs to get out. He is constantly on patrol for the sound of splashing water whether it be breaking on the bow or driving through a puddle. Argos retrieves the ball with the best of them either on Sullivan's or diving off a dock. He has presided over the girls I dated and helped me propose to my wife by carrying the ring on his collar. When my twins were born he welcomed them into my home and protected them while we ran around trying to keep the house together. He is a old dog now and one who is suffering from lymphoma. Despite that he continues to show me how I should live. No regrets for what was undone yesterday and no anxiety of what is to come tomorrow. We have tried chemo but the treatment was worse than the disease. So for these next few days he will maintain his position as the best friend I've ever had and then will leave this world on his own terms and feeling good. He is a unique soul that I pray to meet again in Heaven.

No Judgement Here

I'm currently on a flight to San Diego to hang out with Beau for the weekend. My first time leaving the kids overnight. I"m not nervous at all about it. I just miss them terribly already and I'm already feeling guilty for leaving them...although I know I shouldn't feel that way. But guilt will attack you when you're vulnerable. That I know.

Prior to having children I would never have empathized with the lady sitting a couple ros up from me who is traveling with her baby. Sad to say, I would have been annoyed at the loud cries coming from the child for the first hour of our flight.

But now? Now I completely empathize. I haven't been in her exact situation because, well, I haven't been brave...or crazy enough to take my children on a flight, but I've been a similar one.

A good friend of mine once told me that when your child is screaming in public (wherever you might be) and there's nothing you can do about it and you don't know why it's happening, that those who judge you, shouldn't and those who should, won't. It made sense.

I'm not judging. I know how embarrassed you feel and helpless at your child's screaming. Believe me, I don't want them screaming. It's not like I asked them to or that I find it humorous that we're disrupting your day, but it's happening.

So next time you're in public and a baby is crying, take a look at mom. Does she look completely overwhelmed? Probably. Show her some grace. Buy her some M&Ms or better yet, a glass of wine and smile. Believe it or not, a friendly smile instead of a glaring look can help everyone.

4 months old

Can't believe it! They're so much bigger! It looks like Caroline and Gray are roughly he same size here, but not true! At their well visit Gray weighed 17 lb 12 oz and Caroline weighed 12 lb 13 oz. Such a difference! There's a 2-inch difference in length.

They're both talking/cooing, starting to grab hold of things including daddy's chest hair. Caroline has discovered her hands and how yummy they taste while Gray enjoys sucking his thumb.

Caroline has almost rolled over multiple times and gets frustrated trying. Gray loved his jumping toy, smiling each time it lights up.

They bring such joy to our lives with their smiles and their happy dispositions. Beau and I feel incredibly blessed to be their parents.

Fwd: Photos

Jenn and Alex and their kids came into town a few weeks ago. Beau and I were thrilled to have an evening out with them downtown with the kiddos. Yay for baby-sitters! We all love Mexican food and enjoyed our part at Minero's on East Bay.

And then over the weekend we all enjoyed Splash Island inside of Palmetto Island's County Park. Beau and I have been dying to go in there, but never felt we could since we didn't have children. But that day is here now! We had a blast and can't wait to go back!

Visit from Jenn and Alex

Last weekend Jennifer and Alex and their kiddos came into town for a visit. We hit up the Palmetto Islands County Park Splash Island. Beau and I have been wanting to go in there for years, but alas...no children. Now? Oh yes, we went! And had a great time!

Naturally, our little kiddos needed a nap at some point so we just laid them in the grass. They can sleep anywhere...as long as they're on their tummies.

Of course I had to capture a picture of the girl cousins, Riley and Caroline. I hope they grow up to be great friends!

Friends at Juanita Greenberg's

A couple of weeks ago Andrew and Suzanne came into town with their cuties, Jack and Catherine. We hit up our normal stomping ground, Juanita Greenberg's. It was great to see them and get out of the house for some social time with friends!

Some more recents

Just some more random recent photos on our couch.

Recents

Mom’s been here watching the kiddos for us while I started back to work. She’s good about being quick to pull out the camera, which inspires me to take photos as well. Some recent pics of the kiddos.
